The Hard Crowd by Rachel Kushner
The Hard Crowd is a collection of essays moving between art, politics, and personal reflection, and the design needed to hold a wide range of tones and subjects within one cohesive system.
The typography stays clean and editorial throughout, with enough structure to create consistency across pieces that feel very different from one another. The photo sections are given room to land, with images and captions laid out to feel considered rather than dropped in. The pacing lets each essay breathe while keeping the reading experience unified from start to finish.
The goal was a design that stayed out of the way of the writing while giving the collection a strong, consistent backbone.
