Malady of the Mind by Jeffrey Lieberman

Malady of the Mind is a deeply researched exploration of schizophrenia — its history, its stigma, and the path toward prevention. The design needed to support a manuscript that moves between personal narrative, clinical detail, and extensive reference material without losing the reader.

The typography is classic and authoritative, letting the weight of the subject lead. The appendix sections required careful structure to organize dense diagnostic criteria, drug tables, and clinical checklists clearly and accessibly. Hierarchy does most of the work, keeping complex content readable without oversimplifying it.

The goal was a design that felt serious and credible while remaining approachable for a general audience.
